Classic contemporary at Comme Chez Soi
We were some of the first diners to arrive at Comme Chez Soi on a lovely pre-spring night in Bruxelles. The restaurant is rather small and tables are closely placed. We were seated at the far end of the restaurant by the window, allowing us to enjoy the last rays of daylight. We got an instant feel that service was of great importance. The waiters dressed in shirt, vest and bowtie were very attentive and polite. There was a hostess who came around for a small chat at each table.
The name Comme Chez Soi translates to “just like at your home”, but dinner at Comme Chez Soi does not in any way resemble dining at my home.

Restaurant
Millefuille of smoked halibut, rosemary
Spelt, tomatogel & cod, and stock of shellfish
A trio of nibbles was served. I especially liked the tempura spelt. It came with herb cream – a nice combination.
Carpaccio of veal, head and cheak with picalilli, smoked herring eggs
The carpaccio went very well with the picalilli and the herring eggs. In my view there was no reason to top it off with anything else. The course had too much going on and the cleaness of carpaccio drowned.
Hamashi, spring vegetables, citrus fruit pesto, cream sauce with parmesan
The citrus, cream and parmesan combination worked very well together. A nicely balanced course.
Foie gras, fennel, onions, crumble and old balsamico
Seabass, small snails, squids and bérnaise sauce
I liked the seafood and the bérnaise, but found the decoration (at the back) unnecessary.
Beef, sweetbreads, mashed green peas with wasabi
A very fatty piece of tastefull beef. The wasabi taste was subtle. I would have liked a more penetrating taste.
Strawberry soup with peppermint, spiced sorbet
A very fresh and summerlike dessert with clean flavours. The strawberry icecream had hints of cardamom.
Crispy Sao Tomé chocolate, cappuccino, yoghurt with candied ginger
Petit fours
Througout the meal we were offered extra sauce to accompany the courses. I’ve never experienced that before, but I assume it comes with a more old school style of serving. I quite liked it.
Comme Chez Soi serves classic cusine with a contemporary twist. I enjoyed our meal, but some of the courses were too complex for my liking.
